The Chinese community in Dublin took to the streets on Saturday in support of the Beijing Olympics. Carrying Chinese and Irish flags, they gathered around the GPO in an effort to counterbalance what they see as an anti-Chinese bias in the West.
However, they are frustrated that the Irish media did not cover the event. You'd think the papers would enjoy a bit of conflict (of opinion), especially given that it looked like quite a large group. Perhaps they'll cover it in Monday's papers in light of John Gormley's remarks on Saturday night.

Olympic does not belong to China and Chinese people only, it belongs to the whole world! The behavior of boycotting Olympic is completely unacceptable and unforgivable!
To the people who support "Free Tibet", can I ask you whether you truly understand China or not. Do you understand the 5,000 years history of China? Do you even know where Tibet is? When the so called "Fair and Justice" western media modified and fabricated the truth, and used many unconfirmed information reported as "facts", have you ever realized how ridiculous and naive you are? When more than 3,000 Chinese demonstrated against the prejudice and unfair treatment from the western society, but the media even did not put any single word on it, have you ever been doubt the meaning of the word "justice"?
We welcome the people who truly care about China to provide your opinions to help our country to develop. For these people who still slander and defame at this sensitive moment, please take the so called "justice" clothes off and notice that Chinese people are bleeding in their hearts! It's really hurt! We are here fighting for our country!
Where does this fantasy about an anti-Chinese bias in the Western media come from exactly? Considering its human rights record, China gets off incredibly lightly in the Western media due to the West's dependency on its cheap labour. Is it not enough that the Western media tip-toes round human rights abuses in China in such a cowardly manner - should newspapers also take to praising the wisdom of the Party and the Great Helmsman and spouting nationalistic re-writings of Chinese history instead?
In response to Su's cliched and dubious point about leaving a country to solve its own internal problems:
A) Media reporting of events in a country is not an effort to interfere or "solve" anything, merely an effort to inform people of what is happening. Perhaps Su is unused to the concept of a free press unsponsored by the state, whose job it should be to report events without bias, and takes all reporting to be some sort of propaganda war one way or the other. In that case, has a single Chinese newspaper taken a pro-Tibet stance, or even criticised the government's position at all? Why not? Because they are not allowed. Who's media is biased really? A clear case of the pot calling the kettle black. I hope you dont track my family down and throw poo at our house now.
B) Chinese history. In response to some deeply condescending comments by Su, I would like to ask how historical education in China can be trusted. Is it likely that you have a state-run biased media but objective textbooks? The Chinese/Tibetan situation is far more complex than Tibet simply belonging to China. There were also long periods of independence and rivalry. But the history is tangled to the point of irrelevance. The greivances of the Tibetan people should be addressed as they are now, not brushed aside by citing nationalistic blather from propaganda-laden school textbooks.
C) Problems in China should be left to the Chinese. The government and the majority is attempting to extinguish a minority's culture and believe they should be thankful about it because they are getting roads and schools (in which, no doubt, patriotic education features heavily on the curriculum). If that was happening elsewhere should people intervene? Maybe, maybe not. Intervention is a thorny issue, maybe the thorniest of all. But that is not the question. No-one is trying to solve China's problems, they are merely reporting on them. The entire point is a category mistake produced by nationalistic zeal and an unfamiliarity with free speech. See A).
D) Olympic protests have happened numerous times in the past. Take Melbourne in 1956, Montreal in 76, or how about China forcing Taiwan to boycott the 76 Olympics bacuse they were upset about the country's name? How about the Cold War boycotts in 80 and 84? The view that this is a Western attempt to spoil China's moment of glory reeks of paranoia and itself shows almost no historical knowledge. I ask you in kind, do you understand the many years history of Olympics? Do you even know where Athens is?
And lastly Su, were you there on 14th March yourself? Did you see the riots? Or did you just read about them in the Chinese newspapers, which can tell no lie? No one is tuning a blind eye to the deaths of those Chinese victims. It is the Chinese media which refuses to report on the brutal crackdown or the causes of the unrest in the first place.
